Top 5 Fallout Playthrough Series - Let's Play Countdown

Top 5 Fallout Playthrough Series - Let's Play Countdown
VOICE OVER: Dan Paradis
Like all the best open world RPGs, there's a million ways to play Fallout 3 & Fallout: New Vegas. These are our favorite examples on YouTube!

Welcome to WatchMojo's Let's Play Countdown, the series where we share our favourite Let's Play videos from a specific category. There are SO many playthroughs out there, that we've decided to limit ourselves to those that go through Fallout 3 or Falout New Vegas with a specific challenge or unusual build. At the time we're recording this, we're just a less than a month away from the release of Fallout 4, so this is probably the last time we'll pay much attention to the older editions. Enjoy!

Mad props to the creators of this episode's Top 5 video series: Bryan Pierre, AlChestBreach, Flik's Gaming Stuff, The Weirdist, and Many A True Nerd,

Everyone who’s played Fallout 3 will remember that you begin the game as a baby, but quickly pass through adolescence and into adulthood before you’re set loose. Well, through the magic of console commands and in-game glitches, Bryan Pierre is able to stay in the diminutive baby-form and explore the game from an ankle biter’s perspective.

Thankfully, the developers put in that little section where you can edit your stats again right before leaving the vault, so he does get a chance to build his character somewhat before he ventures out into the world. There you can see that he makes his baby really weak, naturally, but also SUPER smart – which I suppose makes sense since you would have to be one smart-ass baby to get by in the wasteland. Interestingly enough, he picks small guns, which is better than big guns I guess, but still a funny mental image if you think about it…

As hilarious as this concept is, this is not a series for the impatient, as the pacing is quite literally slowed to a crawl. Commenters who stuck with the series seems to love though. Also, if you’re a real purist when it comes to visuals, you may be disappointed that the illusion breaks whenever he goes into vats. I mean, you didn’t really expect to see a baby there, did you? However, hearing the random baby cooing noises the character makes while looting a super mutant or disarming a nuclear weapon makes up for it.

A common complaint about Fallout 3 and New Vegas is that for game set in a eradiated, post nuclear hellscape, it’s still relatively easy to stay alive. DUST is a mod that seeks to rectify this situation by making survival your #1, nay, your ONLY priority.

As you might expect from a “super-duper-hardcore-mod” playthrough like this, a lot of fun of this series comes not from success, but from crushing failure, and in this respect it certainly does not disappoint. If it’s something that can hurt you, chances are the player has been killed by it during this playthrough.

But like I said, that’s part of the fun. That, and the genuine sense of desperation that comes across in each of the videos. As Al darts from one patch of rock to the next, constantly hiding from enemies and looking over his shoulder, the fear feels pretty real – like during this sequence where he blows all of his ammo just trying to defend himself from an onslaught of Tunnelers.

Likewise, the excitement you feel when he stumbles upon a sweet cash of weapons or gear is equally palpable.

It’s probably worth mentioning that the host has installed a whole butt-load of other mods as well. So if you want to duplicate his experience to a T, you’ll have to follow the helpful list he’s left in the description.

Flik’s Gaming Stuff

Apparently, not even the apocalypse and a bullet to the head can stop the revenge of the nerds. Here, Flik sets a challenge for himself that he dubs his “Nerd Rage” build – a character with High Intelligence & Perception, but abysmally low Charisma.

One way this challenge makes for good watching is that since, as a nerd, Energy weapons are his primary means of defense, the series is full of pew pew laser action and more than a few disintegrations.

One of the more charming aspects of this playthrough is Flik himself. His upbeat but not over-the-top personality and Scottish accent raise the watch-ability of the series. This and his many years of experience creating videos separate this series from a lot of the drab, monotone playthroughs out there.

The best part of this countdown is that at the time of this video’s publication, the series is still going on, no doubt leading up to the release of Fallout 4 – which, by the time you’re watching this, miiight be out already. Lucky you, future people.

Continuing our trend of role playing playthroughs, up next we have something even stranger than a nerd in a wasteland: an old lady. But not just any old lady; I’ll let the host explain.

As handicapped as this build may seem, it actually makes a bit of sense, since the weapons that require the least amount of strength to use are usually the explosives, like grenades and sticks of dynamite.

Now, I’d take the time to explain why this is hilarious, but I figure the footage of a grey haired old lady in a dress blowing things up with Dynamite is pretty self explanatory. For an old gal though, our subject definitely has to do a lot of running, especially since she has to get some distance between her and her targets to use her explosive means of defense. But she’s also pretty hardy, despite her feeble amount of strength. Check out her absorbing bullets from the Powder Gangers.

This is also definitely the longest series we’ll be seeing today, with a whopping 151 episodes, each at about 20 minutes. Although it seems that sometime near the end of his playthrough he abandons his original restrictions, he does in fact complete the game in the last episode, so you gotta give him points for perseverance.

#1: Fallout 3: Kill Everything

10 Games To Play While You Wait For Fallout 5

Channel: Many A True Nerd

While this countdown is certainly not a popularity contest, it still makes sense that for our #1 pick, we’re going with a channel that dominates the Fallout Challenge series scene on YouTube. Many A True Nerd has some amazing collections, with an especially good YOLO playthru that definitely bears a mention – but our easy favorite is one that’s crossed everyone’s minds at least once: what if you killed everyone? If this concept wasn’t enough to sell you on the concept, perhaps the inclusion of the “Bloody Mess” perk is…

For a playthrough that basically makes you channel a psychopath, a fair amount of planning and research had to go into making this series. For instance, the host explains that you can only kill Moira after completing her quest – a murder he hopes to commit using the survival guide you help her complete. Unfortunately, the Rock-it-Launcher doesn’t really allow you to load the book, so he explains this before proceeding to do Moira in with the Railway Rifle.

Basically, the best part about this playthrough is that you get a serious education on the ins and outs of Fallout in general; everything from quest order to hidden characters to, of course, creative ways to kill everyone. It also teaches you new and interesting ways to break the game, as there are some characters that you really aren’t meant to kill.

It’s hard to choose the definitive highlights amidst 30 episodes of unrepentant violence, but one of my favorite bits is the Valentine’s Day Massacre of episode 5, which ends in a post apocalyptic version of the Red Wedding.
