Top 10 Rom-Com Lines We Use All the Time

Top 10 Rom-Com Lines We Use All the Time
VOICE OVER: Emily Brayton WRITTEN BY: Jesse Singer
We'll never fall out of love with these romcom lines. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we're counting down our picks of timeless quotes from romantic comedies that we love to whip out. Our countdown includes "Notting Hill," "The Princess Bride," "Moonstruck," and more!

#10: “Snap Out of It!”
“Moonstruck” (1987)

When Nic Cage’s character tells Cher’s that he loves her, she slaps him twice across the face and orders him to “snap out of it!” It’s not exactly what most of us hope for when we open up our hearts to someone like that — but that person is usually not just days away from marrying our brother. It’s just a great line. We might not quote it in the same circumstances as Cher’s character, but “snap out of it!” is a great one to break out in so many other situations. Maybe leave out the slaps though.

#9: “Marry Me. Because I’d Like to Date You”
“The Proposal” (2009)

The film is called “The Proposal,” but the actual proposal doesn’t happen until the end of the movie. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock have spent the majority of the film pretending to be engaged to get Bullock’s character a green card. But after all that time acting like a couple and pretending to be in love — you guessed it, they develop feelings for each other. In classic rom com style, Reynolds comes back at the last moment to really ask her to marry him — because he’d like to date her. Using this line in one’s daily life might seem difficult, but we love it so much, we find ways.

#8: “Love Isn’t Easy. That’s Why They Call It Love”
“The Big Sick” (2017)

Are you the go-to person for all your friends’ romantic problems? Next time you’re in a pinch, try throwing out this line delivered by Ray Romano in “The Big Sick.” What does it mean? Honestly, we don’t know. And neither does the character who says the line — or the character he says it to. But you gotta admit it sounds good, right? And it’s a better thing to tell your friends than his previous bit of advice — which was that you have to cheat on someone to know if you fully love them.

#7: “You Are Everything I Never Knew I Always Wanted”
“Fools Rush In” (1997)

When it comes to love, everyone is trying to figure out what they’re looking for. And sometimes what you’re looking for isn’t what you really want. In “Fools Rush In,” Matthew Perry plays Alex — a by-the-numbers guy who has a one-night stand with Salma Hayek’s free-wheeling Isabel. Their brief encounter leads to pregnancy, marriage, divorce, true love, and an unforgettable line. While a line like this will likely get you brownie points with a significant other, we’ve also been known to use it when talking about a great meal or our new favorite TV show.

#6: “You’re My Exception”
“He's Just Not That Into You” (2009)

Top 10 Movie Comeback Lines

In this ensemble rom com, Alex tells Gigi that if a guy acts like he doesn’t care, it means he doesn’t care — no exceptions. It’s harsh, but in general it’s probably pretty good advice. However, in life there are always exceptions. As the film continues, of course the two develop feelings for each other. And when Alex professes his love for Gigi by calling her his exception, our hearts practically melt. With all the various exceptions in life, there are no shortage of times where this quote comes in handy for fans of the film.

#5: “I Like You Very Much. Just as You Are”
“Bridget Jones's Diary” (2001)

The idea of liking someone for who they are is a popular theme in entertainment. From Billy Joel to Bruno Mars, it’s been a sentiment shared between romantics for years. For our money, though, it’s Mark Darcy’s line in “Bridget Jones's Diary” that sticks with us. Sure, he precedes the statement with a bunch of half-insults, staying true to the literary roots of the film. You may want to leave those out when using the line in real life. But otherwise, this sweet statement of affection is one we always have in our repertoire.

#4: “As You Wish”
“The Princess Bride” (1987)

Most people probably respond to requests with something like “sure,” “no problem,” or “okay.” But fans of “The Princess Bride” have a different reply in mind. You don’t have to be a farmhand in love to say “as you wish.” Although if you do find yourself in such an on-the-nose situation, then you pretty much have to say it. In a film filled with iconic lines, we had to go with one of the easiest, loveliest, and most meaningful quotes to keep referencing. The Inigo Montoya speech is just a bit harder to sneak into everyday speech.

#3: “You Had Me at Hello”
“Jerry Maguire” (1996)

Few films have worked their way into our everyday parlance as much as “Jerry Maguire.” But of all the highly quotable lines from the film, the one that we find ourselves using more than any other has got to be “you had me at hello.” Renée Zellweger’s delivery elevates the line to iconic status, especially as it takes place during the rom com must-have declaration of love scene. It’s also so wonderfully interchangeable. Just switch out the “hello” for whatever someone said and you can take it in all kinds of directions — from romantic to funny to just plain weird. But it works every time.

#2: “I’m Just a Girl, Standing in Front of a Boy, Asking Him to Love Her”
“Notting Hill” (1999)

For a few years in the nineties, No Doubt practically owned the phrase “I’m just a girl.” Then came May 1999 and the release of “Notting Hill.” When famous actress Anna Scott, played by Julia Roberts, puts her heart on the line to profess her feelings for Hugh Grant’s Will Thacker, we all felt it. And while those heart-on-the-line moments don’t come around every day, this line isn’t only useful in romantic situations. The quote works on friends as well — as Raj and Howard helpfully illustrate in “The Big Bang Theory.”

#1: “I’ll Have What She’s Having”
“When Harry Met Sally...” (1989)

Regarded as one of the greatest rom coms of all time, “When Harry Met Sally” has plenty of romantic lines. The best might be Harry’s New Year’s Eve love confession to Sally. But there’s a comedic line that works its way into our daily lives more than pretty much any other. Of course, if we saw someone faking an intense experience in a deli, we’d rush to bust out the quote before anyone else could say it. But it works in other contexts as well — and remains iconic due to the pitch-perfect deadpan delivery by Estelle Reiner, the director’s mother.
